Shining Through: The Dazzling Rise of Lab-Grown Diamonds

Shining Through: The Dazzling Rise of Lab-Grown Diamonds

7th January 2021

The rise of lab-grown diamonds is a truly remarkable story. People have been trying to replicate natural diamonds for centuries using everything from alchemy to imitation techniques. Now, in the 21st century, we have the ability to replicate processes that occur deep beneath the earth’s crust and create real, dazzling diamonds.

When were lab created diamonds first invented?

Lab grown diamonds were first created in the 1950s by a scientist named H. Tracy Hall. The groundbreaking, reproducible process produced diamonds on a tiny scale with a low quality. Hall’s success came from discovering the correct combination of pressure, heat and carbon flux. In fact, those first lab-grown diamonds were so small they were almost invisible to the naked eye.

With the first successful production of lab-grown diamonds completed in the 1950s, the processes rapidly progressed in the following decade. In the 1960s, the International Diamond Laboratory created the first high pressure and high temperature growth technique. Using a growth chamber, this was the first imitation of natural processes to create industrial diamonds. It wasn’t all plain sailing though - scientists were still struggling to make big enough batches that were of a good quality for commercial sale.

By the time the 1980s came around, the International Diamond Laboratory had invented Chemical Vapor Deposition. CVD diamonds are grown using hydrocarbon gas mixture, which increases the quality of lab-grown diamonds to a dazzling standard.

How have lab-grown diamonds developed?

It’s safe to say that we’ve moved into a stunning new phase in the timeline of lab-grown diamonds. In terms of development, the processes are showing no signs of slowing down. CVD and HPTP processes are constantly being streamlined to become more efficient, while also increasing quality. In 2018, the Federal Trade Commission made the correct decision to include lab created diamonds in their definition of diamonds. This unprecedented moment was a testament to the hard, passionate and relentless work of scientists around the globe.

Lab-grown diamonds are now almost indistinguishable from natural diamonds. Each stone in our collection has a quality, appearance and pure carbon composition identical to mined diamonds.

What is the future of lab-grown diamonds?

The future of lab-grown diamonds is getting brighter and brighter each day. The proportion of people interested in lab created diamonds is on the increase, with misconceptions about quality standard becoming less prevalent. Lab-grown diamonds also offer extraordinary value for money, which has peaked the interest of shoppers around the world. Alongside the sustainable and ethical elements of lab-grown diamonds, the better choice is becoming more obvious by the day.
